Last year, a Syrian man stabbed three people to death in Solingen. Now the trial begins. What we know about the perpetrator, possible IS backers—and how one of his victims lives on.

On August 23, 2024, three people were killed and nine others were seriously injured with a knife in Solingen . The suspected attacker, a 27-year-old Syrian, came to Germany as a refugee in 2022, although he should have remained in Bulgaria. He had already applied for asylum there.

Investigators believe Issa Al H. had contact with members of the terrorist organization "Islamic State" (IS) immediately before the attack. This is according to files obtained by the Süddeutsche Zeitung , NDR, and WDR. According to Lena Kampf, deputy head of the SZ investigative research department, he reportedly received messages via the chat service Telegram a few days earlier containing a kind of to-do list for successfully carrying out attacks. Issa Al H. will go on trial in Düsseldorf next Tuesday.

Further news: New Russian attacks on Ukraine, Klingbeil open to AfD ban proceedings.
